Saturday report from Tonimbuk

“It’s taken three years to get here” said Megan Jones after her win of the VRW Civil CCI4*-S class today at the Hanson Tonimbuk International Horse Trials in Victoria, AUS with the tricky but talented 13-year-old imported mare RLE Barina “But we’re peaking at just the right time now, finally”

This makes it two in a row for Megan and RLE Barina, who have really made their mark by winning the first two CCI4* events in Australia this year. It was a close thing however with Sam Jeffree riding Woodmount Lolita finishing just 0.5 of a penalty behind Megan’s winning score of 45.90 in a repeat of last year’s placings

Sam and Megan were neck and neck throughout the competition as they both produced good dressage tests, show jumped clear and then added 17.2 and 16.8 time penalties on cross country. No-one made the time but third placed David Middleton riding WEC In The Money was the fastest, adding 14 time penalties on a cross country course that really benefitted from the recent rain and ground preparations

Murray Lamperd and Raenor Priest’s Secret Mojo were the second fastest around Ewan Kellett’s 4* course, putting them into fourth place and winning the Off the Track Best Performed Thoroughbred prize

Although he didn’t win the CCI4*, Sam Jeffree certainly didn’t go home empty handed, winning both the Charlie’s Stockfeed CCI2*-S and the Horseland CCI3*-S on board Santoro and Koyuna Tactician, making it a very good day at the office for Sam. It turned out to be a better day than expected for the spectators too with early drizzle clearing just in time for the 4* class at midday and staying fine in the afternoon

We have full interviews with the international class winners and 4* placegetters coming up in our full reports coming up this week …..
