The 2019 Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials was a big turning point for Michael Owen  who scored his first international win there.

The 40-year-old rider from Kelsall in Cheshire made his debut at Badminton Horse Trials in 2002 and he has competed there many times since, but he was over the moon with his 2* win on Alison Allman’s Hawksmoor at Chatsworth

“This is our Badminton,” he said “It’s a lovely event and so special to win here because it’s always so competitive. Really, I would have been pleased with a top ten result.”

It was indeed a competitive class with Michael battling it out with Australia's Chris Burton riding Jefferson 18 as it went down to the wire in one of the CCI2*-S classes. They both finished on the same score of 30.80, but Michael took first prize because he was nearest the optimum time.

“I knew Chris was 11 seconds inside the time so I had a few seconds in hand to be closer. And I thought Chris had won enough!”
