Tom McEwen and Bob Chaplin - Houghton CCI4 Star winners

Tom McEwen and Bob Chaplin on course at Luhmuhlen before the fall

Tom McEwen had terribly bad luck when riding Bob Chaplin around the CCI5* cross country course at Longines Luhmuhlen Horse Trials last weekend

Tom was very nearly home when a dog on an extensible lead ran out at Fence 29A, forcing Bob Chaplin to swerve on take-off. He valiantly tried to jump the highest part of the brush then, unavoidably putting his landing gear down in mid-fence, he buckled on landing depositing Tom on the ground

It was a very unfortunate end to Bob Chaplin’s first CCI5* start, especially when the grey 11-year-old gelding owned by Fred and Penny Barker had been on fantastic form in the lead-up. The pair won the CCI4*-S at Houghton International, helping Britain to win that leg of the Nations Cup, and took second place at Burnham Market International CCI4*-S

No doubt they’ll be back better than ever but let’s take a look at how well they can ride a cross country course, when there are no unwanted diversions!
