All horses were accepted by the CCI5* Ground Jury of Christina Klingspor, Nick Burton and Xavier Le Sauce at the first horse inspection at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this afternoon

In a fairly uneventful start to the competition, not a single horse was held or asked to re-present, making it quite a speedy affair without a single anxious moment for riders, owners or spectators. There were a few minor high jinks on the runway by fresh horses but even the anticipated drama when the audience was asked not to applaud Liz Halliday-Sharp’s Deniro Z, dissipated when the 11-year-old Dutch-bred gelding behaved impeccably

67 combinations will now start the dressage phase on Thursday morning with the reigning World Champions, Great Britain’s Ros Canter and Allstar B, providing the test ride for the judges – a treat in itself. The first competitor into the arena at 9:30am will be the defending champion, Tim Price, the only rider to have three horses in this competition, riding Bango

As always, there were some lovely outfits on display but the 'official' Best Dressed Male and Female were Caroline Clarke and Arthur Chabert (France) – more to come about our favourites in our full article  …..

Earlier in the day whilst taking a quick look at the cross country, we caught up with Gemma Tattersall, who has to be one of the hot favourites riding two horses, the 16-year-old Irish-bred thoroughbred, Arctic Soul (aka Spike) and the 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse mare Santiago Bay, who is having her first time here but completed her first 5* at Pau last year.

Gemma is feeling is feeling relaxed and looking forward to Burghley “Which has been the aim all year for both horses”
