This annual eventing fixture at Allerton Park is one of the few chances that the public has to access the 250-acre historic park with lakes and scenic views near Knaresborough in North Yorkshire. It is a lovely event to attend, there is extremely easy access from the A1(M), with arenas and tracks all easily accessible from the central lorry park

Ian Stark’s cross country tracks are bold and educational, designed to encourage forward riding across the undulating terrain offering natural features.  The fences are well-dressed and presented, with a good mix of permanent jumps with sturdy portables to allow variation from year to year and the event says that ‘As always we have carefully assessed and redesigned fences that caused problems previous year’

The BE100 and Novice tracks are designed to be a fair test and educational, particularly for riders aiming to upgrade their horses in the future, the Intermediate track is an open flowing track built with a good variety of fence types to teach and test horse and rider fairly and the Advanced course is designed to give confidence and experience. Wellingtons are required to walk the island water complex .

The dressage arenas are on well-drained flat pasture, with masses of space to lunge and warm up, while the show jumping arena is flat and generous in size with a good-sized warm up area and makes an atmospheric central hub to this vibrant friendly event.

The World Number One eventing rider Ros Canter will be contesting Allerton Park Horse Trials this year which will make for some good viewing but in the meantime, here is Heidi Woodhead and the aptly named Gorgeous DHI, winners of one of the Novice sections in 2018
