Shane sweeps the board at Berrima

“I’m pretty happy,” admitted Shane Rose after he won the Saddleworld Mittagong CIC3* on APH Moritz. Shane had three rides in the class including a new ride for him, Corambo, previously ridden by Christine Bates, with whom he finished fourth while a stop on cross country with Virgil dropped this talented young horse back to sixth. “After riding through the water complex on Moritz, I was a bit worried about Virgil because it was a fair drop in to the water. First time round he had a good look at it, but second time he was really good and jumped it well, so it’s all good,” said Shane.

As Shane collected his prizes he took the opportunity to say a few words ...

The showjumping saw rails going in all directions with Shane and Moritz producing the only clear round. Jessica Rae, who finished second overall in the 3* class, produced the next best round over the tough show jumping track only picking up four penalities with Plenary Indulgence. Moving back to cross country George Sheridan and Siempre were the only combination to make the time coming in four seconds under the optimum time of 6.48. George was rewarded for his efforts finishing third overall.

After a clear cross country round, one of two under time, Hamish Cargill and Starburst shot to victory in the Tertini Wines CIC2*. Lying eighth on dressage day the pair also clocked up a pretty good show jumping round with only one rail down and they will now head to Canberra CIC next month.

Brett Parbery was staying in the background at Berrima - but we understand he will make his eventing debut soon, while Geoff Spears from Wallaby Hill keeps his eye on what's going on

It was Shane’s turn to shine again when it came to the Animal Company CIC* as he finished first and second with CP Qualified and Shanghai Joe. These two horses had led the field from the start of the weekend and remained there for the rest of the event. Heath Ryan rode the lovely grey Aspire R in the one star to finish fifth although in typical Heath style he would have liked to have done better. “I wasn’t that good, but hey you cant really complain can you. The weather has been good to us this weekend here at Berrima so that’s always a bonus.”

Both Prue and Craig Barrett were riding this weekend, although it was Craig that stole the glory after taking the win in the Foxhill Farm Pre Novice. Riding Pam Laidlaw’s Sandhills Piper the pair were second after dressage on a score of 45 and added nothing to that score for the rest of the weekend. “I was pretty pleased with him,” said Craig. “He is by our stallion Stacatto and he is really starting to show his talent … I should probably take this chance to say he’s for sale as well!

Prue chats to Heath Ryan before she goes cross country - maybe Heath could have told her where fence 7 was ...

Prue’s weekend with Sandhills Special in the Prydes Feed Preliminary Div A didn’t go quite according to plan despite lying second after dressage and going clear show jumping … “I missed fence seven on cross country,” admitted Prue. “I remember thinking I had to jump fence six and stay on the top of the dam wall but in doing that I couldn’t find fence seven … other than that I had a good round!” It’s nice to know that missing fences is something that can happen to the best of them! This class was won by Miriam Broadhurst riding Beethovens Symphony. They led from start to finish adding just four faults to a great dressage score of 45.6. “We’ve been placed before but we have never won an event,” said a very happy Miriam. “This horse is really my dream horse, I bred him, broke him in and now have had a win … I couldn’t be happier.”

The junior preliminary riders didn’t have too many problems with the cross country course with 17 out of the 22 riders going clear. The winner was Mikaela Lewis riding SC True Hollywood Style. Another Mikayla, this time Mikayla McVicar (who we spoke to yesterday click  here to hear her interview) went clear cross country to finish eighth.

Alyssa Houston moved up from third after dressage in the Ranvet Preliminary Dev B to win the class thanks to a faultless cross country round, while Mikaela Lewis did a similar feat in the Main Event Photography preliminary junior division, moving up from second to first.

The introductory class was split into four sections and there was confusion across the whole class when it came to how to jump the water complex. Several riders were confused by seeing so many flags, which resulted in it almost looking like a ‘choose your own line’ fence! However the problems were dealt with by James Leva the TD (pictured above) and at the end of the day winners were named: Melanie Mayer won the Gladiator Floats Div A adding nothing to her second placed dressage score of 40.8, while Hannah Wells won the Horsewerks Div B on a stunning score of 33. The Equiscape Amateur Division was won by Jill Severn and Ben Quirico and Arrjay Bollinger took out the Bowral Co-Op Junior division.
