Bundy Philpott rides Tresca NZPH to win the CCI4* at 2020 Horse of the Year New Zealand

The Land Rover Horse of the Year New Zealand, scheduled to run from 7th – 12th March 2023 in the Hawkes Bay region of New Zealand’s North Island has been postponed following Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastation of the area.

Five people have died and thousands forced from their homes since the cyclone arrived, bringing three times more rain in one night than usually falls in the whole month of February in the Hawkes Bay Region.

Despite flooding and damage to the area, the Horse of the Year Ltd Board say that “We are working on the possibility of running the event in early/mid April. Please bear with us while we explore every option. We promise to keep you updated as information becomes available”

The multi-discipline equestrian event at Hastings, Hawkes Bay, that normally attracts over 1400 riders and 1900 horses, was to run a CCI4*-S and CCI3*-S, including the 2023 Oceania Challenge between Australian and New Zealand teams

The event was cancelled in 2021 and 2022 due to the Covid pandemic and was last held in 2020 when the CCI4* class was won by Bundy Philpott riding Tresca NZPH

Equestrian Sport New Zealand has launched a relief fund and donated an initial $5,000  to help those in the Hawkes Bay, Gisborne, and East Coast areas who have been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.

This fund will go towards the welfare of horses and supporting organisations and people on the ground who are providing vet care, hay, hard feed, and more. ESNZ will donate 100% of the proceeds to those on the ground in these regions who need support the most during this time.
