Top jumping performances has kept the North Islander raiders on top in two out of the three FEI classes after the second day of competition at the FEI South Island Three Day Event in Christchurch, NZ on Saturday.

It’s a tight tussle in the Mitavite FEI CIC3* with just 0.1 penalties separating Giles Gormack (Amberley) on Lucero and Kate Fleming (Pauatahanui) on Mendelssohn after the cross country.

Gormack had held a small advantage after a decent dressage performance yesterday. He jumped a smart clear round over the John Carmichael-designed track but incurred eight time penalties to sit on 71.5 penalties going into tomorrow’s showjumping. Fleming was also clear in a faster time to finish 71.6 leaving Gormack with no breathing space.

Te Puke’s Abby Lawrence has maintained the lead in the Ultimate Design & Renovation Limited FEI CCI2* having moved up from fourth aboard Song after she retired overnight leader Indy RE. There was a bit of a shake up in the class with just four finishing after Brent Jury (Cust) on SE Hedging were eliminated for missing a fence and Emily Cammock (West Melton) fell from Ngahiwi Frosty. Current Three Day Event junior champion Lucy Turner now lies second on Carbon on a score of 58.1 penalties with Corey Wood (Wyndham) Pick Up Line third on 59 penalties.

Holly Morrell (Taupo) and Pampero continue to lead the ESNZ Eventing Canterbury FEI CCI1* after putting in a stunning round, finishing well inside the time. Jessie Fitzsjohn (Christchurch) and What’s the Buzz also put in a clear performance to hold second with fellow northerner Dayna Fox (Otorohanga) on LV Little Chief third. It will all hinge on the showjumping though as there is only one rail separating the top six contenders.

In the lower classes courses jumped well with little changes at the top of the order meaning tomorrow’s showjumping will be the decider for many.

Showjumping gets underway in the main arena at 10am following the final trot up which starts at 7.30am.
