RIP Shanghai Joe

Shanghai Joe - CCI3* winner at his first start

Our hearts go out to Shane and Niki Rose and all of their team who have said farewell to Shanghai Joe (Nugget)

Nugget, an 11year old thoroughbred gelding by Another Warrior out of Zenaarena, was bred by Shane and Niki at Bimbadeen Park to race. After trialling for racing, he proved too slow after his trials and then began his career as an eventer. After moving his way up through the levels Nugget had a very successful year in 2014, winning his first CIC3* in Albury, followed by a win at his first CCI3* in Melbourne. In 2016 he again won the CIC3* at Albury, and finished fourth and seventh in the CCI3* classes at Sydney and Melbourne before travelling to the UK with Shane’s Rio horse CP Qualified

A freak accident at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials last weekend saw Nugget loose on course after Shane fell at Fence 19. While galloping back to the stables Nugget slipped on the gravel path at the entrance and fractured his shoulder; a sad decision was made a few days later after consultation regarding his future welfare

On his Facebook page, Shane says

“Sad day today. Had to say goodbye to my little mate Nugget, Shanghai Joe to those that didn't know him. The suspected fracture to his shoulder was worse than expected and left him with no chance of recovery. He was such a lovely horse, he always tried his hardest to please. Great manners and the nicest nature you could want in a horse. It's been a hard couple of weeks for us. Niki and I are so proud of what our little home bred has achieved. The hardest thing was saying goodbye to him when all he wanted to do was have a rub and a cuddle. Rest in peace little man”
