Sam Woods did the double whammy at Sydney International Three Day Event, winning the Kohnke’s Own CCI4*-L and taking the special prize sponsored by the Victoria Racing Club for the best performed thoroughbred in the class

It was the biggest win of their career so far with Sam and the 16-year-old thoroughbred Cage Fighter moving into third place after Saturday’s cross country with the second fastest cross country round of the class. Today they dropped just one pole in the show jumping to win ahead of two more thoroughbreds with Andrew Cooper riding Omega Star in second place and Hayley Frielick’s Dunedin Black Watch in third place.

This was Sam’s first CCI4*-L and he is now qualified for the CCI5* at the Australian International 3 Day Event at the end of the year, which is the next big goal.

Sam works for Shane and Niki Rose at Bimbadeen Park, where he is heavily involved with the thoroughbred pre-training side of the business, so it was fitting that he also won the special $1,000 prizemoney, a Kennedy Oaks Day 2021 hospitality package and presentation rug provided by the Victoria Racing Club. The presence of the Melbourne Cup in all its golden glory was a cause for excitement today at the event as people lined up to hold and have their photo taken with the Cup between the show jumping classes.

Olympic eventing rider and VRC Ambassador Amanda Ross was on hand for the presentations and it was a very good day for Bimbadeen Park with not only Sam winning the CCI4*-L but Niki Rose also winning the CCI3*-L and taking the VRC special prize on board her thoroughbred Dreamcatcher

More to come from across the classes at Sydney International including interviews and more about the Melbourne Cup’s visit to Sydney International plus a full wrap up of the Tokyo ‘Olympic special’ class later this week. But in the meantime, let’s hear from Sam at the end of a long day as he was packing up to head home and celebrate ….
