Andrew Nicholson's Avebury wins British breeder's prize

Andrew Nicholson’s Avebury has won the British Foundation/Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 2013 breeder’s prize for the second year in a row.

Owned by Rosemary and Mark Barlow, the 13 year old grey gelding by Jumbo was home bred by Andrew out of a thoroughbred mare, Bairn Free. He competed the mare under the name Memento with success at Novice level.

Andrew has since sold Bairn Free but has a full brother to Avebury, 10 year old Tristar II (below) who is competing at Advanced level.

Jumbo has sired has sired Badminton, Burghley, Bramham, Blenheim, Saumur and Rolex Kentucky winners, as well as competing to Advanced level himself with much success. He was himself campaigned by Andrew, taking out the 7 Year Old Young Horse Trophy at Lion d'Angers in 1991 - the only British stallion to have achieved this. He still stands at Carlolyn Bates’ Grafham Stud in Devon, also the home of Wish Upon A Star
