David Doel works his magic at Haras le Pin

David has not only support from the British World Class program, but also his grandmother and mother, who are his travelling companions and helpers

David Doel might not be a terribly familiar name to you but the name Koyuna Sun Magic will be. Wendy Schaeffer rode Sun Magic to victory at Sydney CCI3* back in 2005 and came sixth at Kentucky CCI4* in 2007. The connection between Wendy and the Doel family goes back to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics when Wendy and Sunburst were based at Maggie Doel’s yard (Maggie being David’s grandmother) and over the years Wendy has often found herself back in the yard on her overseas trips.

Last year Wendy took Sun Magic over for 19-year-old David to ride and the pair have clocked up some great results, with the best result of his career so far in open international competition last weekend, taking third place in the CIC 2* at Haras Le Pin. In this video interview he explains how he has come to ride the Australian-bred horse Koyuna Sun Magic (Fox), his hopes for the future and the British World Class program which supports him.
