Seumas Marwood is Badminton bound

Seumas, Tyler and Dani are heading to Badminton

Seumas Marwood is heading to the 2014 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials with his wonderful mare Wild Oats for their first taste of international competition.

However, although he may not have competed overseas before, Seumas is certainly no rookie and he has seen the sport of eventing from both sides of the fence. Originally hailing from Tasmania and now based in Victoria with his wife Danielle and son Tyler, Seumas has been knocking on the door selection for many of his 51 years, having had many horses at international level with four of these being selected for National squads or team selection lists. However Wild Oats is the ‘super star’ he has been waiting for.

By Contango II out of a Stirling Liberty mare and purchased at auction as a yearling she has won at every level and is now established as one of the most experienced event horses in the country. At 3* level Seumas and Wild Oats have jumped double clear around both Melbourne and Sydney 3 Day Events as well as at Goulburn, Camden, Canberra, Albury, Camperdown, Naracoorte and Avenal One Day Events.  Wild Oats is also a B grade showjumper and proudly wore the Best 4* Showjumping Round rug presented to her in Adelaide

In 2013 they were named as the reserve for the Australian Trans Tasman team at Sydney International 3DE and followed this up with a third place finish at the Melbourne International 3DE in June. By the end of the year they had recorded a great rise of more than 160 places to finish the year in the FEI World RankingsTop 100 in 76th spot

As well as being an experienced rider, Seumas has had plenty of involvement in the administration of the sport.  He spent five years on the South Australian Eventing sub committee, was the Riders’ Representative on the National Eventing Committee for eight years, followed by a four year term as National Selector and three years as the Chair of Selectors. Seumas resigned from his selectors’ obligations in 2011 to concentrate on his own competition aims with Wild Oats, which now take him and his team to the UK.

Seumas’ wife Dani, also a 3* rider, and his son Tyler will also be heading to Badminton, along with some other supporters, and they told Debbie Higgs more about their plans in this interview
