Pippa Funnell - pole exercises for horses

Pippa Funnell and Tina Cook were the two illustrious guest riders for the session with Angela Tucker at the International Eventing Forum at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire in 2016

An experienced event rider in her own right in past years, Angela is now a renowned trainer as well as a respected eventing dressage judge who has been a member of the Ground Jury at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the 2006 Aachen World Equestrian Games and many major CCI4* events around the world

In this snippet from the session Angela works with Pippa and her home bred seven year old gelding Billy Walk On, using poles on the ground to improve the trot and canter. This is an exercise that everyone can use at home, says Angela

“It’s very good for those of us who maybe only have one or two horses to ride to have poles dotted around the school. You can use them to practise with your eye that you can meet a pole in the rhythm and the middle of your horse’s stride. If you don’t get the chance like Pippa does to jump eight horses as a matter of course every day, you can use this to develop your rhythm and eye to a fence”

What would you give to canter the poles as effortlessly as Pippa and Billy Walk On?
