Burghley Horse Trials 2023 Entry List

An Eventful Life is filming all competitors on XC at Defender Burghley Horse Trials – find out more here

Two New Zealanders and one Australian are among the current entries for the Defender Burghley Horse Trials which starts on 30th August 2023.

World Number One Tim Price, winner at Burghley 2018 with Ringwood Sky Boy, returns with Vitali who took third place in 2022. He is joined by a more recent addition to the Kiwi contingent, Lauren Innes, who changed her nationality to ride for New Zealand in 2022 and is one of few amateur riders at this level, riding Global Fision M.

Australia’s Sarah Clark, who completed her first Burghley last year but had to withdraw from Badminton earlier this year, will be competing her Australian horse LV Balou Jeanz who has been based in the UK for the past 12 months while Sarah has travelled back and forth.

Britain’s Oliver Townend and Harry Meade both have four horses entered currently but will have to whittle it down to three each prior to the event and several riders including Bubby Upton, David Doel, Tom McEwen and the USA’s Boyd Martin have two horses entered.

Defending champion Piggy March, who won with Vanir Kamira in 2022, will be competing Brookfield Inocent, who is back on form with a timely CCI4* win at Hartpury last weekend.

An injury prevented the 2021 European team gold and Individual silver medallist, Brookfield Inocent from competing at Badminton 2022 and he only returned to competition in May this year with Hartpury his first 4* competition back.

“He’s always been a brilliant cross-country horse but, with a lot of time off, you don’t know, and I was just hoping he still felt good” explained Piggy after their win at Hartpury “It was a tough enough track with good terrain and that he made the time easily leave me really excited and, hopefully, has set him up perfectly for Burghley.”
