Track to the Top 10 - Burghley 2018

Esib Power and Soladoun made the biggest jump up the leader board at Burghley

Thanks to Start Box and Stats guru Chris Kirby, here is the breakdown of the Track to the Top Ten for the 2018 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials CCI4*

Check out how each rider fared in each phase - who made the big jumps (metaphorically as well as literally) up the leader board and when they happened plus compare the numbers to 2017

The leader after dressage Sir Mark Todd on Kiltubrid Rhapsody, was out of the competition on cross country day after a fall - a fate which befell him in 2017 when he was riding Leonidas II. “As in 2017 I led after dressage but ended on the dirt” commented Sir Mark wryly “I’d better come back next year for third time lucky”

The winner Tim Price finished on a score of 27.3, just missing out on finishing on his dressage score of 26.9 with 0.4 time penalties on cross country. As in 2017 when Tina Cook added nothing to her dressage score, just one rider, Andrew Nicholson on the 10-year-old Swallow Springs at his Burghley debut, finished on their dressage score

Last year's runners-up, Piggy French on Vanir Kamira, dropped from third overnight to fifth during the show jumping while Harry Meade’s Away Cruising improved on his 2017 Burghley finish by finishing sixth (15th in 2017)

Ireland’s Esib Power made the biggest leap up the leader board from equal 37th after dressage into final ninth place, giving her a personal best CCI4* finish. Local rider Richard Jones on Alfies Clover also had a personal best 4* finish in seventh place, rising 26 places from the dressage phase, and another locally based rider, Willa Newton added an eighth place at Burghley to her fifth place at Luhmuhlen CCI4* earlier in the year, both on Chance Remark

Sarah Bullimore and Reve Du Rouet were consistent throughout the whole competition, dropping from fourth after dressage to sixth after cross country but then back up to fourth overall with a clear show jumping round, also adding to her recent 4* success with three in the top 13 at Les Etoiles De Pau last year including second place for the very talented but somewhat difficult Reve Du Rouet
