How will the new-look Blenheim Palace International play out this week? 143 combinations are set to head to Blenheim Palace, home to the Dukes of Marlborough since 1705, when all will be revealed between Wednesday 15th and Sunday 19th September

Blenheim Palace International has long been a jewel in the crown of British Eventing, who awarded the organisation of the event for the next five years to The Jockey Club in December 2020. Blenheim Palace, built following the first Duke of Marlborough’s triumph over the French in the War of the Spanish Succession and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, affords a stunning backdrop and is set in over 2,000 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland, which provides great cross country action for riders and wonderful days out for spectators

The eventing actions starts on Wednesday afternoon with the first Horse Inspection for the 91 entries in the CCI4*-L class. World Number One Oliver Townend has three entries in this class with two of them being ridden for fellow eventers – Barbury CCI4* winner Swallow Springs, normally ridden by Andrew Nicholson and DaVinci III, normally ridden by Sam Ecroyd who is recovering from a bad fall a few months ago – and Lukas, a relatively new ride for Oliver. Keep an eye on Swallow Springs; it may be a catch ride, but Oliver won the Open Intermediate at Somerford Park on the 13-year-old grey gelding that finished fifth at Badminton with Andrew in 2019

Piggy March won this class the last time that Blenheim ran in 2019, riding Brookfield Inocent who is heading to Switzerland for the European Championships next week. This time it will be Brookfield Quality and Sportsfield Top Notch stepping up to the plate with Piggy, who also has Cooley Lancer in the 8/9 Year Old CCI4*-S class.

Japan took second place in 2019 with Kazuma Tomoto riding Brookpark Vikenti and two Japanese riders are contesting the 4*-L this year – Toshiyuki Tanaka riding the past Shane Rose mount Swiper JRA and Ryuzo Kitijima riding Feroza Nieuwmoed.

Australia has Sam Griffiths and Bill Levett competing with Bill on board Huberthus AC in the CCI4*-L and Sam riding Billy Liffy in the CCI4*-L and Annaghmore Valoner in the CCI4*-S. With riders such as Gemma Tattersall, Ros Canter, Izzy Taylor, Pippa Funnell, Alex Bragg and Nicola Wilson, to name just a few across the two classes, there is certainly going to be plenty happening at Blenheim
