While all eyes seem to be focussed on the drama of potential hurricanes and the frenzied last minute building of facilities at Tryon Equestrian Centre for the coming FEI World Equestrian Games, eventing life in England carried on as normal with the running of the 23rd event at Gatcombe Park, home of HRH The Princess Royal

Gatcombe Park hosts three events per year including the Festival of British Eventing in August but the scenic venue set in the heart of the Cotswolds also hosts international riders from all over the world for both the Autumn Whatley Manor Hotel & Spa International CIC* and CIC** competitions and the Spring Land Rover Novice and Intermediate event

Captain Mark Phillips and HRH The Princess Royal were joint designers of last weekend’s cross country course which ran in the same direction as the Spring event, with the water jump towards the end of cross country and the horses enjoyed some good ground to run across.

Tom Jackson and Dusty II moved up from third place after cross country to take the win thanks to a clear show jumping round

Classes ran at Novice and Intermediate level on Friday and Saturday with the international classes completing on Sunday. Italy’s Giovanni Ugolotti won the CIC1* on board Penhill Celtic, the third event on the trot for this six-year-old horse, while Tom Jackson secured the CIC2* in the very final phase on board Dusty II, an experienced mare returning break
