Ireland’s Padraig McCarthy won the Indoor Eventing competition at last year’s CHI De Geneve but this year he had to settle for third place when another Irishman took the honours in a tight fought, and loudly cheered, battle in Switzerland

The European Eventing bronze medallist Cathal Daniels claimed victory on board Sarah Hughes’ Alcatraz, a horse that seems very comfortable in these indoor competitions, having won the CIX-Arena at Paris and taken second place here in Geneva last year, ridden by Alex Bragg, and winning at the German Stuttgart Masters with Cathal in November

Cathal could assess his tactics as he was drawn late in the competition, and moved ahead of last year’s winner Padraig McCarthy, who had held the lead for much of the evening on board Rosemaber Lancuest.

However, the last to go, France’s Karim Florent Laghouag also produced a great round on Punch de L’Esques, another horse who delights in these environments, with the French rider finishing a strong second.
