Established in 1974, the South of England is one of the longest running horse trials in the country with their British Eventing Horse Trials in April running BE90 to Open Intermediate and the International FEI CCI-3* & CCI-2* in late September.

Located at the South of England Showground, the event offers great facilities, including permanent show jumping/dressage rings, pavilions and onsite stabling.

The showjumping is held in the main Ardingly ring, possibly one of the best permanent grass arenas in the country which plays host to other top BSJA showjumping events and is overlooked by the Norfolk Pavilion with its own licensed bar and the dressage is also held on the Showground’s permanent showing rings and immediate areas with plenty of warm-up space and ring side viewing

The cross country courses run over the showground and adjoining farmland with three separate tracks for BE100, Novice and Intermediate in the Spring and the BE100 and Novice courses particularly suitable for young horses.

Run by Pippa Funnell’s mother and brother, Jenny and Tim Nolan, Pippa won the Advanced Intermediate here last year on Maja’s Hope, who is entered for both Kentucky and Badminton.

Pippa is not competing this time, but her team-mate Tina Cook is competing the very attractive Kilmington Folly, a winner at Cirencester Park (1), in the very competitive Novice Section J and will be up against, among many others, Gemma Tattersall on two of her young Chilli horses

Tina’s daughter, Isabelle Cook will be busy with four horses in the Open Novice U18 with Turbo, Mexican Law, Mexican Rose and Calvino II and Tom Jackson, winner of the Open Intermediate here last year has several rides across the classes

UK-based French riders such as Arthur Duffort and Victor Burtin have been doing well lately and the south of England based Gaspard Maksud may well add to those successes this weekend.

The Open Intermediate on Sunday will see Team Price on course with both Tim and Jonelle competing, as well as New Zealand’s Bundy Philpott, Jesse Campbell and Tayla Mason having a run and they will be joined by the new Kiwi coach, Australia’s Sam Griffiths, also be in the saddle in this class with Paulank Kings River
