As you can hear in the cross country video above, the wind can blow at Larkhill Horse Trials – just the thing to blow away the cobwebs and really get going on cross country!
The open position on the grounds of the Larkhill Racecourse on Salisbury Plain does give spectators a great view of much of the action and there are also plenty of good views for the riders as they gallop along – if they have time to notice them!
The cross-country track, designed by Andy Heffernan, and built by Dominic Moore, is a strong galloping course, offering excellent going over varied ground with some steep inclines. “It is a great start to the season” say the organisers “The cross country will be up to height and will be an educational, flowing course, to encourage both horse and rider while the show jumping is designed by Adrian House sympathetically with early season in mind”
Last year the event enjoyed some lovely Spring weather but, with this year’s current wet conditions in mind, the good news is that the venue is located on well drained old turf, on chalk downland on Salisbury Plain, therefore Larkhill rarely cancels because of bad weather.
The 2026 Larkhill Horse Trials will run for three days from Friday 10th – Sunday 12th April and entries are now open across the classes from BE90 to Intermediate Novice.
Friday Classes: BE90, BE90 Open, BE100, Intermediate Novice, Novice
Saturday Classes: BE100, BE100 Open, Novice, Open Novice U18, Pony Trial Novice
Sunday Classes: BE90, GO BE90, BE90 Open U18, BE100 Open U18, BE100, GO BE100
A host of top class competitors including Harry Meade, a big fan of the venue, Bubby Upton, Sammi Birch and William Fox-Pitt were among those taking wins across all three days of competition in 2025 with Norway's Yasmin Olsson-Payne and Canalatto Denfer taking the top class.
