We’re heading south this weekend to the South of England (1) Horse Trials at Ardingly, Sussex
While South of England (2) later in the year hosts the international classes, the first South of England event hosts the National classes from BE100 to Advanced Intermediate (AI) and is always well frequented by top riders and young stars
This is the home event of Pippa Funnell, whose mother Jenny and brother Tim have run the South of England events so well for many years, and she will be starting two horses, Billy Beware and Morelands Celebration, in the Advanced Intermediate. Also in the same class is Pippa’s team-mate Tina Cook, riding Mexican Law and Billy The Red whilst, adding to the family theme, Tina’s daughter (and Pippa’s goddaughter) Isabelle has five rides across the BE100 and Novice U18 classes
Another young rider to keep an eye on in the AI is Mollie Summerland on the stunning Charlie Van Ter Heiden, who had such a successful CCI5* debut at Pau last year, while Australia’s Sophie Adams, who has just moved to her own yard after spending time based with Pippa, will also be competing in this class
Many Antipodeans are based in the southern part of England, so we’ll also be seeing South of England regulars Sam Griffiths, Kevin McNab and Tim and Jonelle Price on various horses in the Open Intermediate and newly-weds Jesse and Georgie Campbell in the Intermediate (and we'll be keeping an eye out for Jesse's blingy purple jacket too ....)
Another one to keep an eye out for too is last year’s British Eventing Seven Year Old Champion, HH Moonwalk piloted by Tom Jackson, just one of the many very talented horses and riders competing this weekend
