Belsay Horse Trials
Belsay Castle will host two International Eventing competitions in 2025, with both taking place in May.
The usual fixture, now named Belsay International (2) Horse Trials, which incorporates the British Eventing Pony & Junior National Championships, runs from 28th May – 1st June while two weeks’ earlier, the new Belsay International (1) Horse Trials, sponsored by leading London law firm Forsters LLP and wealth management company RBC Brewin Dolphin, will host a CCI4*-S class as a replacement for the Chatsworth fixture, usually held at this time.
New courses for ‘Chatsworth at Belsay’ in 2025
Organiser Laura de Wesselow said that “We felt it was really important to step in and keep Chatsworth’s replacement in the North of England. The Chatsworth fixture carries with it much prestige and we are very proud to have been awarded this event for 2025. We look forward to the challenge of delivering a brilliant event.”
Belsay Castle and Hall in Northumberland has been holding eventing competitions since 2003 but this will be the first time it will host a CCI4* level event at the English Heritage venue near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.
Four new cross country courses, including the new CCI4* course, have been designed by Adrian Ditcham for the “Chatsworth at Belsay” event, providing completely different tracks for Belsay International (1) while Belsay International (2) will use similar courses to past years. A new area for showjumping and dressage will also be used for Belsay International (1) and the organisers are keen to encourage riders to the northern event, offering a prize fund of £5,000 for the CCI4*-S.
The British Pony and Junior Championships at Belsay International (2) are key trials for those chasing selection on British squads for the FEI European Eventing Championships for Ponies at Le Mans (FRA) and the FEI European Eventing Championships for Juniors and Young Riders at Strzegom (POL), both held in August 2025.
The first Belsay fixture also features Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse qualifiers, while Belsay (2) has an array of additional classes, such as the highly popular inter-hunt relay, National Schools Equestrian Association competitions and a BSPS show.
Northumberland Challenge – big eventing prizemoney in the North
Belsay is also one of the three British Eventing venues, along with Alnwick Ford and Burgham International Horse Trials, that form the Northumberland Challenge, offering competitors across the three venues the chance to win some of the total potential prize pot of £61,000 each year.
Tickets are now on sale for both Belsay International (1) and (2) Horse Trials. The “Belsay Bundle” ticket option provides discounted tickets for both events, ensuring that you can enjoy maximum eventing action for a cheaper price, whether you are just coming for a day or wanting to enjoy the full camping experience over both weekends.
