Fiona Gruen is a familiar figure at Canberra Horse Trials and can often be seen in her big hat guiding some ‘long lensed’ un-horsey photographer towards the water jump or pointing a rider towards a journalist from a national magazine or newspaper. “Getting media coverage is so important,” said Fiona “so I do my best to get as many of the newspapers as possible to come along and meet some of our riders. We are lucky to have the involvement of WIN TV and are always happy when we see some footage from the event on the TV. Mind you we are always competing with all the other sports that take place on the weekend so we try to come up with a good angle that has some local and world wide appeal and often rely on riders like Natalie Blundell who comes from Harden and are aiming for WEG selection. Nat is always good with the journalists and is happy to play her part in promoting the event, which is great.”

Nat features in the Canberra Times thanks to Fiona's hard work

We went on to asked Fiona, who also sponsors a class at the Canberra event, how she got the job of ‘Person in charge of media’. You can hear her response below, along with her thoughts on An Eventful Life bringing our video cameras to Canberra’s CIC event in October this year.
