Video Training Tip: Choosing your line

Watch and learn

Visualisation is a powerful learning tool that has been harnessed by many coaches around the world in many sports to mentally learn or improve skills required in competition

So, when we started looking back on some of our 2020 winners’ videos and saw some great examples of training tips in action on cross country, we thought we’d create a library of visual snippets for all eventing riders to learn from

The video above is of Heidi Coy riding the eight-year-old mare Russal Z at Oasby (1) 2020.

Heidi, the winner of the 2019 British Eventing Goldman Cup, awarded annually to the leading rider aged under 21 at the end of the season, started her season off very well with a win in the Open Intermediate U21 at Oasby (1) – read our full report from that event here

Watching the video back, take a look at how Heidi picks her line after her Fence 7 (approx.1 minute 25 into the video) to go inside the small tree. You can see from the ground that not many others have taken this option, but it works well

So then we had to take a look at the video of the Open Intermediate, who just happened to be the world number one Oliver Townend on his superstar Ballaghmor Class and of course he took the same line too! You can watch that full video here
