Tim Price topped and tailed the first day’s dressage at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, taking the lead for a while on his first horse Bango with a score of 29.6 but by the lunch break it was Britain’s Eliza Stoddart who held the top spot.

Riding Priorspark Opposition Free at their first ever Land Rover Burghley and first ever 5*, 26-year-old Eliza, who is based near Market Harborough in Leicestershire, shed a few tears of joy on learning the score of 28.7 and was quite amazed to find herself still in the lead at the end of the day on a horse she has produced herself

“He’s fairly strong in this phase and I’m confident in this phase too so I was really hoping to be in the top 15 after dressage” says Eliza “But to be in the lead is totally mind boggling!” Watch the full press conference video below

Sarah Bullimore riding Reve Du Rouet joined Tim in equal second place in the afternoon, setting herself up for potentially yet another top 5* finish. This combination was fourth here last year, fifth at Luhmühlen this year and the pair has completed eleven CCI 5* competitions together, including a career best second place at Les Etoiles de Pau 4* in 2017
