“It’s a great event, I absolutely love it” says Megan Jones of the Lockington Horse Trials which is taking place this weekend.
Located at Victor Harbour about an hour from Adelaide, the home of the Australian International 3 Day Event, the event which is in its fourth year is fondly known as the The Turf by the Surf due to its proximity to the South Australian coastline. This year Lockington is playing host to the South Australian State Championships as well as debuting a brand new 2* course designed by Wayne Copping and Tracey Leigh.
The event is hosted on Tracey’s parents’ property at Evesham Farm, Waitpinga and takes its name not from the location, as many events do, but is named after Tracey’s first elite horse, Lockington. Lockington was a well known horse in South Australia and Australia that took Tracey from pony club level through to International competition. He passed away at the age of 30 in 2008 and is buried on the property where he will no doubt be keeping an eye on the event held in his honour
As well as the CNC1* and 2* classes, a CNC3* is being run which includes 3* dressage and show jumping tests with the cross country being run over the 2* track at 3* speed. There are also EvA classes from EvA80 to EvA105 and a Newcomers section for the less experienced horses and riders
At this time of year in Australia riders are always on the lookout for good going and local Olympian Megan Jones says that the going here is ‘amazing’
“It’s naturally good going” says Megan who will be competing several horses on the weekend “It is naturally good loamy soil with lovely lawn like grass. The course runs through a bowl which is great for the spectators and it’s a tough enough track. There’s also a new water jump this year”
