Ireland team change

The Irish Eventing team were dealt a blow today less than 24 hours before the start of the Olympic Eventing competition in Tokyo, with news that Galway’s Cathal Daniels has been forced to withdraw his mare Rioghan Rua (ISH) from the opening Dressage competition for veterinary reasons.

Daniels will be replaced by Austin O’Connor who travelled to Tokyo as Reserve/P Alternate. The Irish team will not incur a penalty for the substitution as it is taking place before the competition is underway.

O’Connor will ride the 11-year-old grey gelding Colorado Blue whom he owns along with the Salty Syndicate. Cathal Daniels and Rioghan Rua now revert to being the Reserve/P Alternate combination and can be called upon if required later in the competition – only of course if the veterinary report improves.

Tom Carlile and Birmane competing at Blenheim Palace International 2019

Updated 27th July 2021

The defending Olympic team champion, France has suffered another blow in its bid to retain their Olympic crown

Following the early withdrawal of Thibaut Vallette, France’s Tom Carlile has now withdrawn the 10-year-old Birmane. The travelling reserve Karim Florent Laghouag will take part in the team competition riding Triton Fontaine, leaving France without a Reserve substitute

On social media, Tom has said that “It is with a heavy heart that I announce the withdrawal of my mare from this Olympic deadline. I wish Karim and Triton Fontaine a great Games, I am sure they will defend the hopes of the whole French team as well as possible”

Birmane suffered from a bout of myositis (tying up) following a gallop session earlier this week – a muscular problem that the mare has suffered from in the past. Tom and the team thought the condition was well under control, with the mare having suffered no incidence of it for the past two years. However, the climatic conditions in Tokyo may have caused a resurgence of the problem

“We had been warned that the weather conditions would be formidable. Despite all the measures taken by the organisers, my mare cannot acclimatise to these conditions. She will come home healthy once the Team has finished the Games. And we hope to see her again soon at the top of the podium”

Belarus now also has only one competitor with the individual combination of Aliaksandr Faminou  and Martinie having withdrawn
